Construction of a Clinic and Maternity Centre at Aiodoo I, Benue State, Northern Nigeria
A cornerstone of the Bridge Education & Development Foundation’s efforts to improve women's health and general well-being, especially in rural Nigeria, is our “Clinic and Maternity Centre” initiative, designed to improve health care access in underserved communities by addressing access barriers.
The Foundation, with the support of our national and international partners and donors, plans to build and equip five (5) fully functioning “clinic and maternity centres” in selected rural locations across Nigeria over the next 5 years.
Continued inability of rural population, especially women, to access quality healthcare services has resulted in poor quality of life relative to the urban centres. Rural
communities in Nigeria continue to experience high prevalence of preventable diseases, high incidences of preventable death, high rates of maternal and prenatal mortality, high rates of infant mortality, and shorter life expectancy generally.


Construction of Our First Clinic and Maternity Centre at Aiodoo, Benue State, Northern Nigeria
We are currently embarking on a major fundraising drive for the construction of our first Clinic and Maternity Centre to be located in the village of Aiodoo I, Ogbadibo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, in Northern Nigeria.
This community has an estimated population of 176,800 people (2016) in a land area of 500.6 square kilometers. Located 250 kilometers west of Markurdi, Benue State capital, Ogbadibo shares boundary with Olamaboro local government area (Kogi State) in the West, and Udenu local government area in Enugu State to the east. Over 80% of residents engage in small scale farming cultivating produce such as cassava, yam, beniseed (sesame), bambara nuts, melon and millet as a means of livelihood.
There are only two small primary care clinics which are underequipped and hardly adequate to efficiently and effectively serve the health care needs of 176,000 people. Like many other rural communities in Nigeria, Aiodoo I people face significant healthcare access barriers, which include inadequate facilities, lack of testing/diagnostic/lab services, workforce shortages, low level of personal/family financial resource, and a dearth of health literacy.
Project Deliverables
Our clinic and maternity centre initiative will deliver a modern health-care facility in Aiodoo I, Ogbadibo LGA, which will provide easy and affordable access to healthcare services such as primary care, dental care, emergency care, pre- and postnatal care, and public health services for 176,000 people. Consistent with the Foundation’s mission, this
initiative among other benefits will:
- Make healthcare services available and obtainable to rural population.
- Ensure that financial means to pay for services does not constitute a barrier to health care services.
- Guarantee women’s access to obstetric services.
- Guarantee timely and adequate prenatal care.
- Attract the needed workforce to rural areas for healthcare services.
Construction Financing Model:
- Privately financed by Foundation’s partners and donors.
- Required pre-construction and construction financing - N180,000,000.00 ($400,000.00).
- Pre-construction and construction timeline - August 2021 to August 2022.
- Estimated Delivery date: August 2022.
Operational Sustainability Model:
- Public, private partnership (PPP) model.
- Sourcing for funding for equipment and staffing – December 2021 – April 2022
- Equipment and plant Installations and Recruitment of personnel - August to December 2022)
- Commissioning – December 2022.
